As a pet store worker, I see a lot of people walk in and buy a betta fish without taking the proper steps to ensure a healthy and happy life for their new fishy friend. So, I want to address some common mistake I see pet parents make and how to avoid them.
The big mistake people do is buy tanks that are way too small.
Betta fish need a minimum of a five-gallon tank. If they do not have enough space to swim around, it will significantly shorten their lifespan.
Please don’t keep your betta in a fishbowl.
Unless you want your life to be dedicated to water changed, betta fish need to be in a tank with a filter. This will help keep the water clean and healthy for your fishy friend.
Betta fish need heaters.
Bettas thrive in water temperatures of 75-80 degrees, and standard room temperature water is too low for healthy bettas. This is why a heater is extremely important as it will help prevent your betta going into shock.
Making sure to keep these things in mind when caring for your fish will get them a chance to live upwards for 3-4 years.
