By now, almost everyone has used their time in quarantine to watch the thrilling documentary, Tiger King. This documentary has people asking important questions, not about the treatment of big cats, but about if Carole Baskin killed her first husband or if Joe Exotic deserves to be in prison.
Carole Baskin?
The latest trend has been targeting Carole Baskin with memes and songs about the disappearance of her first husband. While Tiger King wasn’t’t focused on this case, the producers made sure to allude to the idea that she murdered her husband. Without any evidence in the show to back up this claim, everyone jumped on this bandwagon of hating this woman for one reason. It’s fun. It’s fun to collectively, as a country hate the same women and make parodies about her.
Joe Exotic?
After the blow up of TK, there has been a movement to free Joe Exotic from prison. He was sentenced nearly a life sentence for cases of animal cruelty, yet people are petitioning for his release. There isn’t any evidence to support that Joe shouldn’t spend the rest of his life paying for the crimes he committed. Yet, people have chosen to support Joe because he’s the crazy old man that everyone loves to love.
I believe that part of this is the fault of Tiger King’s producers. They claim to want to make a series about the treatment and preservation of Big Cats in the country, but yet they turned their documentary into a TV drama focused on alleged murder, polygamy, and crazy cat stories. Everyone is focused on talking about Joe and Carole that no one is actually worried about the big cats and their safety.
